KMnO4 Dark purple crystals with blue matalic sheen that is obtained from the following procedures: 1) Oxidaton of the manganate in an alkaline electrolytic cell. 2) A hot solution the manganate is treated with carbon dioxide on cooling, the solution deposits crystals of the permanganate. It has astringent taste, odorless and soluble in water, acetone and mathanol. Decomposed by alcohol.
Potassium Permanganate is used as an oxidizer, disinfectant, deodorizer, bleach, dye, reagent in analytical chemistry, medicine (antiseptic). Additionally, it can be used in air and water purification; radioactive decontamination of skin; tanning and in the manufacture of organic chemicals.
